I had recently resolved to start biking to work one day a week. Its 23 miles each way, which puts some time constraints on my day. Now with gas hitting $3 a gallon (I saw it at $3.01 for premium on way home), I'm thinking about 2 days a week.
Wouldn't this be a great time for bicycle commuting to work

I had a thought tonight that might work for me and some others. Its 23 miles each way to work, so I have to commit roughly 3 hours for both ways. However, since I feel comfortable leaving my car at work, I could do something like this..
Monday - Drive to work (early) and pack my bike, and bike home at end of day. Tuesday - Bike back to work, put bike in car, drive home at end of day.
Same thing Wednesday and Thursday. This way I'm only needing 1 1/2 hours each of those days. You really have to be in situation where you can leave your car at work, and I'm sure most wouldn't feel comfortable. Or if you could somehow get a ride from someone and bring your bike.
Lots of options, I'm just guessing that since gas is going to keep climbing, biking to work is going to be a great option and I'd like to promote it here.

Tried that experiment. Ride home last night was as perfect as it could be. Woke up at 6:00 this morning and cracks of lightening, ughh. So I waited until 7:30 and it was still raining but no lightening. I dont mind riding in rain as long as its not freezing. Very nice, I recommend it

I started a new job in August, and I thought it would be too far to commute, and a lot of the distance would be on roads I consider dangerous. I figured commuting was now out of the question. However, after studying Google Maps for quite a while, I came up with a nice solution.
I now put my bike up on the roof rack, and drive to the parking lot of a mall 20 km from work. I leave the car in the lot all day, and nobody seems to mind. Cycle from there to work, and then back to the car in the evening. The best part is this: The 20 km route I discovered is almost entirely on a bike path following a scenic river through the heart of the city. I just love my new commute - it's the best I've ever had.

I like that way even better than my tactic of leaving my car at work. I just cant find a good spot to park. 20 km, or 13 miles would be a very nice distance too, its a great accomplishment for you

actualy I have more to add, should have read the other comments before posting. halfway and bike sounds awsom, again unfortunatly there not a whole lot between where i can park, and it's a highway, so cycling wouldn't be very comfortable anyways. i tend to keep to low trafic roads, bike trails and only go on highways when absolutly necessar and when its only for a very short distance. around here we have a free public bus system, so i park at the park and ride so that if i get to tired and/or it gets realy dark (don't like riding in the dark when i can help it) i can just take the bus(which has a rack for two) and drive home the rest of the way. that being a very short distance, the equivelent of the 'drive half way and ride the rest' with the advantage of a failsafe in those rare cases when a bus is very much apreciated.
