How early do you start biking on a tour?
      #304 - 10/16/03 05:20 PM

I have finally determined that I've done about 20 tours in my life. Some were as short as 2 days and longest was 2 weeks. Anyway, I've started biking as early as 6:00 when the sun was barely peaking out, and I've started as late as 10:00.

Let me say that I much prefer earlier than later. It isn't easy for me to get up, I'm more of a night owl, but what I've learned is that 10 minutes on a bike and I'm usually awake and having fun. So I dont like to throw away the hours slumbering in.

My perfect day starts with just a granola bar or even some oatmeal. I liked to be packed and biking by no later than 8:00. Then I like to stop for a nice lunch or even brunch if I get hungry earlier.

Its nice to be done biking by 2:00 - 3:00. For me, a good 60 mile day with a mid-afternoon completion gives me time to sight-see, goof around, have a nice dinner or whatever.

I also prefer to start early. It's easy for me to get up early in the morning. I love to start when the birds have started chirping and the sun has just risen.

Up with the sun and on the road. The first hours of the new day are allways awesome. Your fresh and the wind is normally light. Most of the yahoos are not on the road yet and a short break during rush hour can be had without alot of guilt for not starting out sooner. I don't usually ride when the temps are below 55 due to some minor nerve damage (causes my left arm to stiffen up like its dead) but when the temps are warm I beat the birds most mornings.
